The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) celebrated its 50th anniversary on 1 January, half a century after its official launch on the first day of 1975. The Health and Safety at Work Act turns 50 on 31 July 2024.
Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, praised the important role the HSE has played in helping to reduce the number of deaths and injuries at work since its inception, while stating: “There is still a lot of work to be done to prevent deaths at work.” Unfortunately, the number of deaths in health and safety at work in 2024 has increased compared to 2023.
To reduce this number, the HSE must have the resources it needs to ensure that the progress made since the 1970s is sustained and that health, safety and wellbeing at work and the well-being of workers continue to improve over the next 50 years.
