Eiffel Tower elevator catches fire, 1,200 tourists evacuated

The Eiffel Tower, one of the most iconic landmarks in Paris, attracts an average of 25,000 visitors a day. About 1,200 tourists were evacuated from the iconic Paris landmark on Tuesday after reports of a fire in an elevator shaft between the first and second floors.
The Eiffel Tower elevator fire, which broke out around 10:30 a.m. due to an overheating elevator cable, was brought under control, Euronews sources said. Access to the tower was restricted during the operation while the fire was contained.

The Eiffel Tower has also experienced a major fire in the past. The Eiffel Tower elevator fire broke out in the control room in January 1956 and caused significant damage to the upper part; repairs took a year.
