Testing of the SpaceX elevator by NASA astronauts designed with the Starship system to carry out NASA’s Artemis III and IV missions
SpaceX elevator testing by NASA astronauts
Two NASA astronauts recently announced the testing of the SpaceX elevator. This elevator is designed with Starship system. The main purpose of designing this elevator is for NASA’s Artemis III and IV missions.
This elevator carries equipment and crew between the habitable zone of the starship and the surface of the moon. SpaceX’s elevator test allowed astronauts to familiarize themselves with the elevator’s design and handling. It also provides an opportunity to receive constructive comments and criticisms from astronauts regarding the use of elevators in space travel.
SpaceX’s facility in Hawthorne, California, has built a replica elevator with a cabin and a full set of mechanical parts. During the show, NASA astronauts donned spacesuits that simulate the suit sizes and movement restrictions a crew would face on the moon.
Axiom Space has developed new advanced spacesuits and they will be used by the Artemis III crew. The astronauts provided good feedback on the elevator control system, such as door locks, ramp deployment interfaces for moving in and out of the elevator car, space available for cargo, and dynamic operation while the car moves along a vertical rail system.
