Modernization of Bokoto Hospital Elevator and Escalator by Nippon Otis
Nippon Otis Elevator Company, the Japanese subsidiary of Otis Worldwide Corporation, has completed the Bokoto Hospital Elevator and Escalator Modernization Project to renovate 21 elevators and two escalators at Tokyo Metropolitan Bokoto Hospital in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, Japan.
Established in 1961, Tokyo Metropolitan Bokuto Hospital serves as the main center for the eastern region of Tokyo. This hospital has 765 beds and provides high quality medical services.
The multi-year elevator and escalator modernization project at Bokoto Hospital began in 2014 and was meticulously planned to upgrade the old equipment and minimize disruption to patients and hospital operations.
The renovation includes four elevators and two escalators in the medical building and 17 elevators in the office building. With the implementation of the elevator and escalator modernization project of Bokoto Hospital, the earthquake resistance and safety performance of all units increased significantly.
Elevators are now equipped with advanced accessibility features such as handrails and LED lighting is used to create a bright and energy-efficient environment inside the cabin. In addition, the operation management system in some elevators has been optimized so that passengers can move more efficiently between floors.

During the modernization of the elevator and escalator of Bokoto Hospital, the movement of equipment and materials was done during the hours of the day when there was less traffic. Work that resulted in vibration, noise, or smell was performed on days when hospital wards were closed to outpatients.
Patrick Jung, President of Nippon Otis, said: “I am pleased that Nippon Otis has been entrusted with the Bokoto Hospital elevator and escalator modernization project. “This was carefully planned over a long period of time to avoid disruptions, and we are proud to help improve the hospital environment by providing safe and comfortable mobility for patients and medical staff.”
“Our hospital is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so the biggest advantage was being able to use the elevators with confidence and comfort during the hospital’s elevator and escalator modernization process,” said Satoshi Miyakawa, CEO of Bokuto Hospital. Let’s use Bokoto.
The elevators are now more wheelchair accessible and the interior of the cars has been designed with a wood grain pattern to create a calm atmosphere and contribute to a comfortable ride experience for passengers.”
